确实，同是义乌人，却未必听得懂对方讲方言。靠近诸暨的红峰、燕窝等地讲诸暨话；而胡山、大陈、凰升塘等地，既可用诸暨话又可用义乌话；与浦江交界的仙坪、鲤鱼山、大方等地，则义乌话和浦江话通用。除了难听懂，义乌方言里还保留了许多古音字，比如“吃”叫“食”、“玩”叫“嬉”、“不”叫“弗”、“筷子”叫“箸”、“造房”叫“葺屋”等。
