According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the ocean traditionally functions as a "carbon sink" that keeps our planet's temperatures in check, soaking up approximately 31% of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by human activities.

According to Bruce Robison, a senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, it’s “the most comprehensive description of a deep-sea animal ever made.” The team published its description in Deep-Sea Research Part I and comes on the heels of over 150 additional sightings of the creature by MBARI ROVs.

It took nearly 25 years for biologists to discover that a swimming and glowing organism in the ocean’s midnight zone was actually a sea slug,” reported The New York Times.
