Drone maker DJI plans to take on GoPro with its Osmo Action 5’s improved sensor it claims rivals professional cameras.

For quite some time, GoPro has ruled the high-end action camera world. While plenty of other companies have tried to dethrone the action camera giant, and some have come close, none have quite hit the nail on the head. DJI, the company best known for its drones, is having a go again with a new pro-level model of its own action camera.

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro ($349) addresses one of the big areas in which action cameras have historically struggled: battery life. The miniature, mountable, waterproof cam rolls for longer than two hours at 4K60,

DJI has, however, added internal storage to the tune of 47GB in addition to micro SD, plus matched GoPro with Wi-Fi 6 to speed up image uploads to your phone. With all of these upgrades considered, the Action 5 Pro provides an all-round improved user experience, but at a 10% steeper price point than the Action 4.

DJI’s Osmo Action 5 Pro is available today starting at $349 / £329 / €379 for the standard combo kit, which includes the horizontal-vertical protective frame, battery, USB-C cable, and a number accessories for mounting and cleaning your new action cam.

Osmo Action 5 Pro can connect directly to the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter via Bluetooth, enabling ultra-high-sampling-rate audio recording. This setup provides studio-quality sound while eliminating the need for a receiver. When Built-in Mic Audio Backup is enabled, ambient sounds can be recorded to add a richer layer of authenticity.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro ups the ante for rugged action cameras with features aplenty and performance in line with its best competitors.
