Has anyone heard of hiking from the town of Lone Pine to the Whitney summit and back in one day? About 44 miles round trip and 10,000 foot elevation gain. Obviously the reward would be hiking the entire prominence of the mountain from valley floor to peak and not driving the first 12 miles up the portal road. Not sure if anyone outside of select ultramarathoners, etc. could actually pull it off.

Hi, I have a permit to stay at Outpost. Is it normal for people to pack up there camping kit and leave it in a tree or behind a rock to pick up on the way down? I don't fancy carrying up a tents and things I don't need for the summit. Thank you

Most just leave their tents up with their gear inside...hiking the remaining miles without the extra weight. Near the trailcrest, where other trails meet, I saw backpacks just sitting out in the open. Once you're climbing, you'll quickly realize you would prefer to carry the minimum possible...to steal your stuff would be taking on extra weight. Theft...not impossible, but more than likely, it won't happen to you. That being said...don't leave ANY food with your stuff...the animals will get for sure!
